I am not a regal eagle, ruler of the wide blue sky;
I am not a croaking crow with feathers of the darkest dye;
I am not a goldfinch with a coat of dazzling golden plumes;
I am not a nightingale with melancholy song that booms;
I am not a little sparrow swifter than the arrow flies;
I am not a big-eyed barn owl; I am neither old nor wise;
I am not a songthrush that sings to announce sunrise;
I am not a vulture who circles when somebody dies;
I am a wren; little brown wren; not pretty nor fierce but proud;
No nightingale; no songthrush but, by heck, I’ll sing as loud.
