Once upon a time there was a little girl called Daisy whose mother and father loved her very much and always taught her the motto, "As Springtime follows winter, so good times will follow bad".
Unfortunately, the girls parents both died leaving her an orphan and she was forced to live with her evil aunt and her wicked cousins who treated her terribly, making her dress in rags; eat scraps and leftovers; sleep on the cold kitchen floor and do all their housework just like their servant while they sat about idly and scoffed chocolates.
All the same, however, the little girl did not get down hearted for she remembered the words her parents had taught her, "As Springtime follows winter, so good times will follow bad" and she was sure her life would get better.
Then, one Easter day, her evil aunt and two wicked cousins sent her out on an impossible errand; something her cruel foster family often did because, each time she failed an errand, it gave them a reason to punish her.
"Go out and get a rabbits egg", they said to her, "A nice big one that we can cook for supper and make sure you find one or we will have to beat you as punishment".
Poor Daisy was sure that rabbits didn't lay eggs but she was afraid to say anything incase her evil aunt beat her for talking back and so she took an egg basket and went out to see if she could find a rabbits egg.
But as she was looking for one, peering down rabbit holes to see if she could find a nest with eggs in it, she met an old lady who was passing by.
"My dear", said the old lady, "What on Earth are you doing?".
"Trying to find a rabbits egg", said the little girl, "I have to find one. If I don't bring home a rabbits egg then my aunt and cousins will beat me".
Hearing this the old lady was appalled.
Fortunately, she was no ordinary old lady but a very powerful witch and so, reaching under her cloke she conjured up a large strange looking egg and, handing it to the little girl, said,
"Here my dear, take this to your aunt and cousins".
"Is it a rabbits egg?", asked Daisy.
"It is", said the old woman, "And a very magical one, just wait and you will see".
And so, thanking the old lady for her kindness, Daisy took the egg home to her Aunt and her cousins.
When the girl presented her Aunt with the egg however and told her it was a rabbits egg , her Aunt just became angry.
"Why you wicked little girl!", she said, "How dare you come in my house and tell me such terrible lies. You know very well that there is no such thing as a rabbits egg".
"But..but you said -", said Daisy, starting to protest.
"Quiet!", shouted her Aunt, "Just for lying, you ungrateful girl, you will get a terrible beating and no supper either"
Hearing this, Daisy started to cry.
But then, just as her Aunt was about to scold her again, this time for getting her tears upon the carpet, suddenly the egg within her aunts hands started to hatch.
Crick-crack-crick was the sound it made as, all over its odd sky blue coloured shell, little cracks started to form and then, before her evil Aunt could say any more, up out of the egg leapt an enormous white rabbit.
Her Aunt shrieked as the rabbit appeared, leaping out of her arms and hopping all about, which made Daisy laugh.
But her Aunt wasn't amused and, reaching for her long handled broom she raised it to strike the rabbit with.
"Laugh at me would you", she said to Daisy, red with rage, "Well you just wait, young girl till I've dealt with this rabbit, you won't laugh then".
But then, when her Aunt tried to hit the rabbit with her broom, to her astonishment the rabbit grabbed hold of the broom and pulled it off her then the rabbit started to chase her round the room with the broom, whacking her over the head with it.
"Oh help! Help!", the Aunt cried to Daisies wicked cousins, "Help me my daughters. Save me from this devil".
When her daughters came to see what was wrong however, the rabbit started to chase them aswell, infact the rabbit chased the Aunt and her wicked daughters out of their house, down the road and far away and they've never been seen since.
After Daisy had stopped laughing, however, she started to worry.
"Without my aunt and my cousins", she wondered, "How am I to survive?".
Just then however there was a knock at the door and, answering it, Daisy saw that it was the old woman who had given her the egg.
"Don't worry, my dear", she said to Daisy, "You can come and live with me if you want. I've always wanted a daughter and I'd be so happy if you would let me be your mother".
And so Daisy went to live with the old woman in her cottage and they both lived happily ever after.
