Once upon a time, there was an unruly boy named Ragolezzo, a boy who'd been abandoned by his mother and father and was always getting into trouble and he was adopted by a kindly, wealthy family; a man and woman and their daughter.
And they tried to show the boy love but the boy just kept getting into trouble. Sometimes he would smash up his room in a rage. Other times he would get into trouble with the police for stealing or causing a public disturbance and his rich foster parents would have to pay to bail him out of prison.
"If he were my son", a policeman advised them, "I would beat some sense into him. What he needs is discipline, plain and simple".
But his foster parents didn't believe in smacking children; they were very soft hearted you see.
One night, however, into the boys bedroom came the devil.
"Ragolezzo", he said, "I have come to take you away to the place where I take naughty boys".
And seeing the devil, with fiery eyes and mouth; long teeth and claws and horns like flames and a body like the dark of the deepest pit, Ragolezzo was terrified.
"Help! Help!", he cried, trying to run away but the devils right hand grew ginormous, wrapping its fiery fingers round Ragolezzos waist and then a fiery door opened up within the floor with steps of shadow leading down into it and the devil began to carry Ragolezzo off down the steps while Ragolezzo cried and screamed.
As he was doing this, however, Ragolezzos foster father, mother and sister, hearing the commotion came running into his bedroom and, seeing what was happening, they grabbed hold of Ragolezzo by the feet and refused to let him go, yelling to the Devil, "Stop! Stop!"
"But Ragolezzo is a naughty boy", said the devil, "And I must take naughty boys down to hell".
"But we love him", said the foster family, "We'll never let him go".
And because love is a powerful thing, even more powerful than the devil, the devil was forced to let go of Ragolezzo.
"You are lucky", said the devil to the boy, "That you have someone who loves you".
"I know that now", said Ragolezzo, hugging his foster family.
But then the devil, going back down his steps of darkness, closed up the door in the floor and after that Ragolezzo tried harder to be a good boy and even though he made mistakes he kept on trying and one day, when he was an old man with children of his own, a door opened in the ceiling, a door of pure white light and golden stairs descended out of it and then, telling his children, "Always remember; they are lucky who are loved" his spirit left his body, walking up the stairs to where Angels were waiting to take him to Heaven.
