Once upon a time a little girl called Curlylocks was abducted by a wicked witch and taken to her house, bound and gagged.
Then the witch said to the girl, "Now I will just go off to pick some wild herbs and when I come back I will cook you in my cauldron for my supper".
While the witch was away, however, Curlylocks started to cry and when she did all the things in the witches house, that were enchanted things, felt sorry for her.
"That witch is evil", said the witch's cauldron to the other things in its booming cauldron voice, "I won't be used to cook that little girl, no matter what the witch does".
And then the knife spoke up,
"That witch probably intended to use me to kill the poor child but I won't let her use me so. She can't make me kill an innocent, not ever", he said.
But then the axe spoke up,
"What if she uses me to do the evil deed. Oh, I who was made for the innocent task of woodcutting. If she tries to use me to do the deed, I will refuse", said the axe.
Then the hammer spoke up,
"I agree with axe. She may try to use me for foul murder because I am blunt and heavy but I was made to hammer heads of nails not of people", he said.
Finally the witches rope spoke up,
"And what if she tries to use me to strangle with?", it said, "Then my hemp will be tainted with innocent blood. No I will not do it either".
But then, just as they had finished talking, the Witch came home and, seeking a weapon to kill Curlylocks, she picked up the knife but the knife had a mind of its own and refused to be used to kill the girl, stabbing the witch in the hand instead.
"Whats this?", said the witch to the knife, "My own knife turned against me?".
"And so I have", said the knife, "For you'll not use me to kill a child".
So then the witch put down the knife and picked up the axe but the axe refused to be used for murder and, instead, flew from the witches hand out of her door and buried itself in the trunk of a tree.
"More mutiny!", said the witch angrilly, "My own axe refusing to obey me".
"And so I do", said the axe, "You won't use me to do such an evil deed".
Angrilly, the Witch picked up her hammer,
"This is blunt and heavy and will do the work aswell as any sharper tool", she said.
But the hammer refused to obey the witch as well and, instead, slipped from her grip and landed on her toe.
"Gahhh!", screamed the witch, "Will none of my tools do my bidding?"
But then the witch saw the rope and thought,
"Well I can still tighten a rope around the little brats neck".
But when she picked up the rope, it would not obey her either, infact, it wound itself around her like a snake and refused to let go.
"You won't use me for murder either", said the rope, "I'd sooner strangle you than the girl".
Exasperated, the witch turned purple, her pointed nose turned as red as a red hot poker and steam whistled from her ears, then she let out a terrible scream.
"Well", she shouted, unrwrapping herself from the rope and throwing it to one side, "If I cannot use knife, axe, hammer or rope to do the job, I shall just use my own two hands".
And she rushed towards Curlylocks to wring her neck but, as she was running towards her, the rope caught her by the foot and she tripped and fell into her own cooking pot which, because the water inside was boiling, killed the witch instantly.
After that, the rope that bound Curlylocks's hands and feet untied itself and she ran home to her grandpa but, because she was grateful to the tools for saving her life she asked her grandfather, who was a carpenter, to use them so that they would have a good master and, with their help, he and his granddaughter became very wealthy and lived happily ever after.
