Rose Red and her rescuers

Once upon a time, a little girl named Rose Red because of her long red hair lived with a dog, a cat, a bird and a mouse in a little cottage in the countryside and they were the best of friends.
But, one day, an ogre came tramping out of the forest and seeing the little girl hanging up clothes upon her washing line abducted her, putting her in his sack and carrying her off to his cave where he kept her as his prisoner.
But then the dog, sniffing around, smelled that the ogre had been nearby and barking, he summoned  the other animals and when he told them about the ogre smell they all guessed immediately what had happened to their mistress so the dog, the bird and the mouse, because they were exceptionally brave and loyal decided that they should go and rescue her.
They asked the cat to come with them too but the cat was too afraid of ogres and told them they were all fools for trying to rescue the girl and would no doubt end up in an ogres pie.
But the dog, the bird and the mouse weren't convinced by the cat and so they set out all the same.
And, using his keen sense of smell, it wasn't long before the dog had tracked the little girl to the cave of the ogre.
But there was no way to rescue the girl while the ogre was in the cave and so the bird, flew into the cave and seizing hold of the ogres magic wand in its tiny talons, it carried the wand off and, not wanting to lose his magic wand, the ogre went chasing angrilly after the bird.
Then the mouse and the dog went into the cave and, because the hands of the little girl were tied, the mouse chewed through her ropes.
But then, just as they were all going to leave the cave the ogre came back.
He had caught the bird by its tail feathers and he had his magic wand aswell and, with it, he turned the little girl, the dog, the mouse and the bird all to stone and then, putting his wand to one side, he started to prepare his cooking pot to cook the little girl and her animal friends for his dinner.
But while the girl, the bird, the mouse and dog had been away, the cat had started to get lonely in the cottage all alone and so it had set out to find its friends.
And when, reaching the ogres cave, it saw them all turned to stone, the cat crept stealthily into the cave and, while the ogres back was turned because he was busy stirring his cooking pot, the cat took hold of the ogres magic wand in his mouth and he touched each of his four friends with the end of it and, no sooner had they been touched by the magic wand when they each were turned back to normal again.
Then all the friends, while the ogre was standing over his cooking pot, crept up behind him and pushed him into the pot.
Then they all ran back home.
But sadly, though the ogres pot had been full of boiling water; ogre skin is very tough stuff and so the ogre did not die, infact it just made him more angry and so he came with an axe in one hand and a spiky mallet in the other to get his revenge upon Rose Red and her friends.
Fortunately, the bird who was flying above saw the ogre coming and it warned the mouse and the mouse warned the cat and the cat warned the dog and the dog warned Rose Red and they all fled their cottage, going to the lake that was nearby.
And there were two boats by the lake so, into one of the boats got Rose Red and her friends and the dog and the cat and the mouse all started to row with different sized paddles.
But when the ogre reached the cottage and found Rose Red and her friend gone he went to the lake and got into the other boat and started to row it after them, using his axe and spiky mallet as a pair of oars.
"Quick", woofed the dog to Rose Red, "Use the ogres magic wand to turn him to stone".
And so Rose Red pointed the wand they had taken from the ogre at the ogre and wish he would turn to stone.
But, as anyone who knows about ogres can tell you, ogre magic doesn't work on ogres and so the ogre wasn't turned to stone.
Infact he just seemed to row even faster.
"Oh no", cried Rose Red to the animals, "Its not working. What are we going to do?".
But just then however, the cat had an idea.
"He may not turn to stone", said the cat, "But perhaps his boat will. Try turning his boat to stone".
And so thats what Rose Red did.
Pointing the wand at the ogres boat she made a wish and all at once the ogres boat turned from wood into grey granite and because it was turned to stone, ofcourse, and stone can't float on water, the ogres boat began to sink.
And fortunately for Rose Red and her friends, ogres can't swim either because they're almost as heavy as stone and so the ogre sank too, right to the bottom of the lake and was never seen or heard of again.
After that Rose Red and her friends went back to their cottage where they lived happily evermore.
