Sugar and Salt

This whole world draped in snow white flakes
looks nice enough to eat
just like a pretty Christmas cake
dripping in icing, sweet.
And all the stars that twinkle
round about our milk white moon
look like white sugar sprinkled
from a magic silver spoon.
But snow white scenes, like salt, must seem
rubbed in wounds of the poor;
and winter, without wealths sweet dreams,
be bitter to endure.
Oh Christmas could be such a time
of joy for everyone
but never till the wretched crime
of poverty is gone.
