Once upon a time there were two little girls named Tira and Tiara.
One was the daughter of a wealthy landowner and the other the daughter of a serving maid but, because they were young children, they didn’t notice or care about the difference between them and made a pledge that they would always be friends.
“If either of us forgets the other”, they said, “Then may the fairies take them to their crystal kingdom and may they never return” then, pricking their fingers with a golden pin to seal the vow they let two drops of blood fall upon the ground which instantly grew into a bright red rose.
However, as the years passed by, the two girls grew up and grew apart because the parents of Tira married her to a wealthy nobleman in another county and, over time, she forgot her friend.
But the moment that she did, the fairies came and snatched her away, taking her to their invisible kingdom and locking her in a magical crystal prison.
When her husband found out that his wife was gone, he was at a loss because he hadn’t a clue where she could have disappeared to and, when he went to ask her parents, not even they seemed to know.
But then, one day, Tiara was walking past that place where they had made their vow when she heard the voice of Tira cry out, saying “Oh why did I forget you, my friend. Now I am in the land of the fairies and I cannot get out”.
Hearing this, Tiara was very distressed and vowed that she would rescue her friend.
“But how can I find or travel to the invisible fairyland?”, she wondered.
Then she saw the rose that had bloomed from their blood and, picking it out of the ground, saw it turn every colour the eye can see before becoming red again and, when it returned to red Tiara noticed that she was standing in the kingdom of the fairies and, opposite her, was her friend locked in the crystal prison.
Tiara was overjoyed to see her friend again but Tira was only saddened.
“If the fairies catch you”, she said, weeping onto the crystal floor of her dungeon, “Then they will never let you leave”.
Tiara didn’t care, however, “Let them catch me then”, she replied, weeping aswell, “For I would not be unhappy to stay here with you”.
But then, suddenly, the Fairy King appeared like a shimmering mist “Intruder!”, he said, “You shall not leave, either of you, without paying me first”.
Neither Tira nor Tiara had anything with which to pay the fairy king and they told him as much however, then the king looked down and saw a heap of diamonds lying at their feet where their tears had fallen, “What are those!”, he said, his crystal eyes sparkling, “Ahh! The wealth of friendship”.
And so the two friends happily gave him the diamonds and, as soon as they did, the magical rose glowed all the colours that the eye can see and the door of Tiras crystal prison disappeared and, joining hands around the stem of the rose, they both flew through the air, returning to the spot where they had made their vow.
After that they made another vow; a vow that they would always be friends, no matter what and Tiara went to live with Tira and her husband, marrying his brother, and their new vow was never ever broken.
