Envy thinks the stars are not so bright
and says of mountains, “They are merely hills”;
she calls crow black, the dove of purest white
and, in the warmest summer, feels a chill.
Though envy, deep within, is not so blind
and sees what other truer hearts can see,
to all deserving praise she is unkind
and cannot bear those things she cannot be.
