There once was a boy called Hans who, because his mother died leaving him penniless, set out with only a piece of cheese in his pocket but as he was walking along he met a mouse who was very hungry.
"Please have you any food?", asked the mouse.
"What will you give me if I give you some cheese?", asked the boy.
"I will give you this thimble that I wear as a hat", said the mouse and, taking off a thimble hat it gave it to the boy so the boy gave it his cheese and then he went upon his way.
But then he passed by a young maid who was sewing but always pricking her finger.
"Please, do you have a thimble?", she asked.
"What will you give me if I give you a thimble?", asked the boy.
"I will give you this fine handkerchief", said the maid and, taking an embroidered handkerchief from her bag, she gave it to the boy so the boy gave her the thimble and then went upon his way.
But then he passed by a prince who was sitting under a tree weeping.
"Please, do you have a handkerchief?", he asked.
"What will you give me if I give you a handkerchief?", asked the boy.
"I will give you a golden coin", said the Prince and, taking a golden coin from his pocket, he gave it to the boy so the boy gave him the handkerchief and then went upon his way.
But then the boy passed by an old wishing well and the wishing well asked,
"Please, will you throw a coin into me".
"What will you give me if I throw a coin into you?", asked the boy.
"I will grant any wish you ask for", said the wishing well.
So the boy threw his gold coin into the wishing well and wished for a flying carpet which instantly appeared and then, getting on his flying carpet he flew off.
As he was flying though the air, however,he passed by a princess who was locked in a tower.
"Please, will you rescue me?", she asked.
"What will you give me if I rescue you?", asked the boy.
"I will give you my hand in marriage", said the Princess.
And so the boy hovered upon his flying carpet near the window of the tower and the princess climbed onto it and then he flew her back to her palace and later they were married and lived happily ever after.
