A long time ago there lived two herds of wild horses; a white herd and a black herd and the white horses and the black horses were fierce enemies who were always fightning, all apart from two, that is; a young black stallion called Libra and a young white mare called Zephyr who were deeply in love.
And because they came from feuding herds, they had to meet each other in a secret spot near an old waterfall and everytime they saw a star fall across the heavens, thinking that it was a starhorse flying by they would make a wish upon the wings of the starhorse that the rivalry between their two herds would end.
One day however a lion that was hiding behind a tree saw them and leaping out it attacked Zephyr but then, Libra, rearing up on its hindlegs fought desperately to protect her and, while this was happening, Zephyr ran to Libras herd to get help for him.
At first the black herd did not want to listen to her but then she kicked one of the black herd, the brother of Libra and he chased her all the way to the waterfall.
When they got to the waterfall, however, Libra was dead, killed by the lion.
Devestated by the sight of her beloved Libra lying dead, Zephyr ran back to her herd.
But then a parrot who had seen the whole thing and liked to gossip told the herd of Libra and thinking that it was Zephyrs fault, the Black herd attacked the white herd and a vicious battle ensued.
While they were fighting however, suddenly, Zephyr started to go into labour for she was carrying Libras child.
And then, to every horses amazement, the horse that she gave birth to was not white and it was not black either but a horse with both black and white stripes.
Seeing the remarkable horse both the herds took it as a sign that there should be peace between them and to that horse, the child of Zephyr and Libra, was given a name that fused their two names into one, Zebra.
