The wolf in Shepherds clothing (A fable)

- 1876 reads
One day, a wolf who had heard the story of ‘The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’ had a bright idea. Instead of putting on the wool of a sheep, he crept into the shepherds cottage and killed the shepherd while he slept and then he put on the shepherds clothes and carried his long crook and went out to see the sheep, telling them, “Beware, my flock, because among you are wolves only pretending to be sheep. If you find out who they are, tell me and I will remove them for the safety of the herd”.
All the sheep, hearing this, became very suspicious of each other and, whenever they believed that one of their fellow sheep might be a wolf in disguise, they went and reported that sheep to the wolf in shepherd’s clothing and the wolf took the suspected sheep away, with the help and support of the other sheep and, of course, ate him up with mint sauce.
And none of the herd ever cottoned on to the wolf’s evil trick; never noticed how long his ears were or how big his teeth were because they were too busy looking for the wolf among them.
