Paris in Darkness: The Olympiad’s Opening

In the heart of France, where dreams collide,
A tapestry of nations unfolds,
Colours swirling like a painter’s palette,
People streaming in from every corner,
A vibrant mosaic, a festival of flesh and spirit,
The world gathered, breaths held, hearts racing,
The Olympiad, a stage set for the bold.
Here she stands,
A bit fat woman,
Portraying Jesus,
Cloaked in robes of irony,
A crown of thorns made of delicate blooms,
Mirroring the weight of faith,
With a laugh that ripples through the crowd,
A critique wrapped in compassion,
A celebration of paradox,
And beside her, in sequined splendour,
Drag Queen disciples,
Flaunting colour and charisma,
Resurrecting the Last Supper,
Their laughter echoing in the warm evening air,
Mocking the solemnity of tradition,
Revelling in the audacity of love.
The crowd erupts,
Cheers like fireworks,
But beneath the surface,
A current of unease simmers,
Electricity crackles, the pulse of the city,
A promise of illumination,
Yet, it falters, stutters,
The lights begin to flicker,
A sign of the chaos to come.
Suddenly, the hum of life falters,
Trains screech to a halt,
A city’s heartbeat stilled,
Disruption weaves its way through the throng,
An orchestra of confusion,
Voices rising, melding into a cacophony,
Where laughter turns to worry,
And joy morphs into a quest for answers.
Paris, once a canvas of light,
Now cloaked in shadows,
The Eiffel Tower a ghost against the night,
The Seine, a black ribbon,
Reflecting not stars, but the uncertainty,
Of what was to be,
And what has unravelled,
The electric grid, a lifeline severed,
Leaving dreams suspended in the dark.
Yet in this darkness,
Even the dimmest stars can shine,
As voices rise, A chorus of questions
Daring the night to swallow them whole,
In this disruption, they try to find unity,
In spite of the challenges
Of a world that, in shadows,
Still dares to celebrate.

What a great poem, showing
What a great poem, showing the uncertainties of France and the World so well at this time of celebration, athletic competition, delicate compromise, and working together! But the games are under threat from some kind or kinds of terrorism and sabotage, as well as the rain, and there remains the feeling that the power could be sabotaged at any moment, and that political, cultural, ethnic and economic differences could break out again at any time.
