This is what I think

This is what I think (3rd June 2008, 10.28pm)
I think that you’re afraid of being caught out.
Why do you admit that you’re a cheat
when that’s your bottom line:
a kiss is just a kiss, isn’t it?
and ten years is a long time
to hold a measly kiss against the one
who you still think of
as the love of your life,
and measure everyone new one up against
like some impossible yardstick.
I sit and watch you eat bachelor curry
out of a tin can with your nearly new fork
and wonder why your greatest flaw
(I did not see that one coming)
is the one that you judge others by.
I cup my tea and tell you I can’t lie:
you don’t believe me.
The irony
was not lost on me;
not much gets by.
I think that you’re afraid of loving someone
who loves you back in the same way:
with a slight kink in it;
a kiss is just a kiss, isn’t it?
and cheating is how you define it;
it’s a pre-agreed circumstance,
and if that’s the one imperfect thing
about her, the lost one,
then I think you should get over it
as if you are actually twenty-nine.
I cup my tea and tell you you’re an idiot:
you make me tick,
and ten years
has been lost on you,
hasn’t it?
