I Shall Ask No More Of You

I shall ask no more of you,
For your scuppered charms won’t hold.
Time has enveloped you kindness,
Stolen your once-strong resolve.
Yes, I shall ask no more of you
But if you want to help you can;
Lend me your age-acquired wisdom,
Help me to understand.
Why do you make it difficult
When I only speak to you with ease?
Has the lightness of your heart faded?
Are you now so hard to please?
I shall ask no more of you
Than I think you would deserve.
The flames of passion you once burnt
Are now fuelled by angry reserve.
I would like to bring you comfort,
If you’d allow yourself to say,
Why you feel so miserable
With the passage of each day?
Hear, I shall ask no more of you
Nor for your scuppered will to prevail.
So rest you head my sorry, sad friend,
Listen to the widow’s wail.
