Night Music

Startled silence after gun-shots
Then...Music
Unfurling into dry, beaten air
Our song begins to call out
In soft minor keys
Tonight children will die!
Tonight children will die!
Somewhere in mounded rubble
A stray dog whimpers in falsetto, whining
His thin voice peircing, harmonising
Sitting slumped hacking, a man
Wheezing and heaving up his last rites
The scratchy bass tones of mortal defeat
While in makeshift wards
The nameless wounded moan
Creating a mournful refrain
Glass shards tinkle underfoot
A light percussion amidst destruction
Listen! A heady beating tempo
The young nurse's pulse
Will we get through tonight?
Will we get through tonight?
Now, the chorus of a wailing mother
Her melody of misery running free
Vocal grief rising, unreigned...
A cresendo soaring up high
Into the hazy smoking sky
Orange ball of sun has dipped and set...
Heavens are pitted and black
Whistling incendaries will signal the reprise
Ladies and gentlemen, come along now, please take your seats
Our song has struck it's first chord
The Night Music has begun.
