What A Day
I'm a single guy thirty-four never been married
and have lived in a one-bedroom apartment
for the last two years.
A week ago I was laid off from my job.
I woke up Monday morning and right away
it was starting out to be a bad morning for me.
I stumbled out of my bed into the kitchen
and reached over to turn the electric
coffee pot on and a small spark flew out from
underneath it, this is not good.
So I disconnected it and tossed it into the trash.
After showering and cleaning up I decided
to go down to the corner convenience store and
get me a large cup of coffee.
As I was getting in to my car I noticed that
I had left the glove compartment open all night,
I took some papers out of it and forgot
to close it.
I went to start it and the motor turned a few
times but the battery was dead.
My next-door neighbor was out watering his grass,
I asked him if he had some jumper cables
to jump start my car.
He was nice enough to help me get it going.
I finally got down to the convenience store
and dropped my car off next door at a gas station
to charge the battery.
I went into the store and got my coffee and
a brownie to keep me going.
I was in such a hurry to drink my coffee that
I grabbed it so fast spilling half of it near
the coffee pot.
I hung out at the store for a short while waiting
for them to charged my battery next door.
As I was paying for the coffee, I bought
a lottery scratch ticket and told the clerk
that this has been a real bad-bad day
for me so far.
I said to the clerk, maybe this lottery ticket
will change my luck.
I went over to the station next door and got
my car and headed back to my apartment.
I parked in front and begin walking toward
my front door.
I scratched off that lottery ticket with a penny
I found on the sidewalk getting out of my car.
Suddenly it seemed like just in a few seconds,
my day change from bad to good.
It was worth forty-five thousand dollars" I was
so excited that I just couldn't control myself.
I looked at the ticket over and over to be sure
it was a winner. I yelled out forty-five thousand"
to myself, I couldn’t believe it.
The following day I rushed down to the
lottery office.
I was the first customer in there and cashed
in the ticket. I then hurried down to my bank
and cash the check they gave me.
I took two thousand dollars in cash and
deposited the rest in my account.
I stuffed the two thousand cash in my pocket
and drove a few blocks to my favorite restaurant.
I was so happy I could hardly eat and just
ate a little of what I ordered.
It felt so great pulling all that money out of my
pocket and paying the bill and giving the
waitress a nice tip.
As I walked out onto the sidewalk in front of the
restaurant I looked down near the curb and
I noticed an empty beer can leaning over on
its side. I walked over to it and kicked it with
my foot gently a few times and it rolled back
and forth a few feet down the sidewalk.
A homeless person was leaning against
the building, he said hey" is that can bothering
you sir? I'll pick it up and toss it in the trash
for you. No it's not, it's kind of fun kicking it.
I kicked it a few more times and it rolled off
of the sidewalk onto the street.
I looked back towards the homeless person
and yelled out, "what's your name"? Jim"
he replied. Jim come on let's kick this dam can
down the street together.
He stood there looking a little surprised at me
and said hell, It does look like fun, let's do it.
Together we continued kicking the beer can
about a block down the street until
it rolled down into the drain gutter.
We sat down on the curb laughing and half
out of breath.
Jim said he had not had that much fun in many
years, it took him back to when he was a kid
playing kick the can.
As we sat there on the curb talking, I reached into
my pocket taking my money out and
counting out ten one hundred dollar bills and
handing them to him, and said" here have fun Jim.
He was stunned” and surprised, and said,
What the hell, your giving this to me? wow”
why me? I said because I wanted it to turnout
to be a good day for both of us.
Tears start rolling down his face as he started
crying with happiness he said, oh my God....
Thank you - Thank you - Thank you.....
After about 20 minutes sitting there talking
back and forth, Jim continued counting
his money over and over.
As he stood up and shook my hand, He said,
this will give me a new start.
Then we both went our own way.
