They know the rules. It’s a starter for ten.
They have to buzz and they mustn’t confer.
There is Zachary, Quentin, Rebecca and Ben;
a formidable team, and its captain is her.

The questions are varied and rather tough,
the opposition is weak - they have lost before -
and their general knowledge is not enough.
If they want to win they have to swot more.

Rebecca’s colleagues are all cock-a-hoop,
ready for battle and full of self-confidence:
it’s almost certain they’ll make a clean swoop
and climb the heights to a greater eminence.

But what is all this? They can’t get it right;
the quizmaster smirks and then he scoffs.
It’s unbelievable but they are losing the fight.
For once the plebeians have beaten the toffs.

Like this, Luigi and my mind goes back, of course, to Bamber Gascoigne in the early days, way back when. I don't even think we had colour then, although I may be wrong;-) as indeed I often am. Much enjoyed. Tina xxx

I too remember Bamber Gasgoigne, Tina, but can't recall if it ever was in black and white. Sign of old age, I'm afraid. I watch the current series and find myself competing with the students and sometimes knowing an answer that they don't. Glad you liked the pome. Luigi xxx

Glad to have been included in your poem, Luigi ;) I get my A level results in 2 days, hopefully should be off to Durham University - can't really see myself on University Challenge though! Lovely rhythm in this one - and a great, just ending! Magic xxx

New Luigi_Pagano Well done, great poem on University Challenge and your poem, weel deserved cherry! Greatly explained it. I to watched it, Bamber Gasgoine. Quite often got some Q right. I am from low class. and missed bit of school. 11 plus enough for me. Mine was a Grammar school m to, sit and shout answer's wrong? baffl;ed me. But we laugh. I am sure as you say MistakenMagic will be top of the tops, never look back! look at her talent here. and have read the new issue ABCTales Rebecca is in what talent. and all in it. Now I will have to swot! too, for, AbcTales. all the best to all of them. julie xx

Dear Julie, watching University Challenge is great fun and it was also fun writing a poem about it. Getting a cherry was a bonus. I have read the ABC magazine which as you say was full of talented people's work. I noticed MistakenMagic's photo in it. It is nice to put a face to a name. I thank you for your nice comment. new Luigi_Pagano Dear Luigi yes, I absolutley agree beauties, and Silver-Spun-Sand, Tina, and MistakenMagic's Rebbecca. One teenager, or older had a job telephonists trying, people come in and pay payments cars etc; I alway's think does the voice go with how they looked, my word no, tall person squeaky voice, litle person may jave a deep, the lloks to me entirely different to what think. Yes, congratulation's on the cherry! too. But it is cleverly worked out. all the best julie xx
