Blood of our fathers

Blood of our fathers,
on foreign green field spilt.
Resting heads in crying hearts,
to you our hats we tilt.
Once so young ,with youthful touch,
life ran through happy vein.
In forgotten fights on foreign shores,
you transcend our life of pain.
In darkest hour of dismal day,
we will ne'er forget,
the life you gave for freedom's love
cleansed your last regret.
I stare at field & tree & leaf,
in sunshine & in shower
& wonder at your courage then,
in your finest hour.
Loved ones lost in sodden trench
for cause of other's plight,
You walk eternal in our prayers,
toward the Saviour's light.
At peace you rest in mind & tear,
reclaimed by fire & earth,
stored in faded memory's breast,
you live in life's rebirth.
We sing to you our lost ; our kin ;
In hardened heart, you stay.
To you ,our heroes, we raise a glass
On this D of Days.
