Sky Lantern

Launched from a beach one Winters night.
A sky lantern reaches for the moon and stars.
I fall behind and let the others walk on towards the cove.
Time to reflect.
Alone with my thoughts for few moments before take off.
I lie on a makeshift bed of sand.
In awe at the myriad constellations shimmering above.
Could the handfuls of sand I hold equal their number, I wonder.
A rocket swishes overhead popping golden streamers.
The signal,time to launch dreams.
I check my little message is secure.
My wish now hangs by a delicate silken thread.
To be taken aloft.
Towards the star filled sky and a smiling moon.
The messenger, a glowing red heart shaped lantern.
A night flight for a wish wrapped in kisses.
Fingers crossed, away it drifts.
My message for love trails behind.
Higher, higher...till...
I watch the lantern flare and spiral slowly down to greet the sea.
My wish extinguished by a heartless wave .
