The Green-Eyed Monster

She was right.
It is not just a monster,
but a venomous snake.
But I’d like to explore how it comes to be.
It is conceived in the trembles and nerves of a first date.
It solidifies, taking form and shape in the kiss.
With the more kisses taken, and thoughts shared
The hard scales grow, turning poison green as time goes on.
By the time love takes its own physical manifestation
Inside lays a dormant Basilisk;
Fangs: as long as your heart, as strong as your claws;
Skin: as strong as steel, as hard as your own;
Eyes: as bright and beautiful as the sun, as telling as your own.
But, until the end, you are none of these things. The beast within sleeps; and so you are soft, gentle, and open
But when it does come…
Your tears will awake it,
Your internal screams will call it,
And slowly, over weeks and months,
It will coil around your heart, hold you fast,
As it wraps itself around you several times, tight and fast.
Its eyes will stare out of your soul,
Your heart will rest in its open mouth,
Obscure to anything seeking to find you.
You will be hidden by the thick barrel of jealousy.
It will again lie dormant for some time until the alarm sounds.
It may be two hands holding, the one that use to hold yours.
It could be rumours whispering in your ears.
It would be literal confirmation from the ex.
At this the beast would bite into your heart.
You would feel his long, sharp, thick fangs sink into your heart;
You will slowly lose yourself to that final grief from here on.
His eyes will look through from yours;
What you would do if his eyes were yours,
that you might carry an execution through them,
that you might kill him
with a blaze from your eyes.
He is a sly, secretive seducer and for that reason, the beast within, the green-eyed monster, is a serpent.
