A week with Peter 12/17

They picked themselves up. Neither of them was hurt although Peter seemed a bit shaken. Jennifer Jane was more used to this sort of thing and began looking the broom over to see if she could spot anything wrong with it. It looked perfect. It was nicely glittered but just wouldn’t respond to her commands. She had a thought and did a quick twiddle for a chocolate swiss roll. Nothing!
“We seem to have flown into a dead spot where magic doesn’t work. A bit strange because I’m sure we flew over this area on the way here. We’ll just have to start walking in the general direction of the Witches’ Home until I can make my spells work again and then we’ll be home in a jiffy.”
They started off. It was hard going through the undergrowth and they were both relieved when they found a small path leading in the right direction which they were able to hurry along. Not too surprisingly, the path lead them to the small clearing among the trees where they’d seen the cottage earlier.
“Let’s ask if the owner knows of a quicker way to get nearer the Witches’ Home.”
A lady answered the door. “Witches’ Home? Well you are a long way out of your way. Why not come in and have a bit of a rest while I go and get my horse saddled up.”
She showed them the way through the house to a small room at the back. Peter held back politely to let her go through first, but she pushed him so hard that he fell down inside the room and then slammed the door behind them. As he picked himself up off the floor they could hear bolts being pushed home and a key turned in the lock.
“You’ll have to stay in there for the rest of your lives. You can’t get out, I’ve made the bolts and lock especially for this day. You’re responsible for turning my brother Malcolm into a vegetable at that Witches’ Home of yours. He told me all about you and your protective spell, so you’ll be fed every day and won’t come into any danger. That way the spell won’t be able to work.”
