3. Tom’s Homework!
Tom was quietly trying to do his homework in a corner of the room one evening when Toad became very active.
Tom left what happened when Bill got 3, and Tom 19, and Lucy got the remainder given that the total was 45, it seemed totally unfair to Bill anyway.
Toad had done the same trick when he wanted to look at the red worms on top of the compost bin.
Toad said, “Vampire worms!”
Mum said, “Tea bags!”
Tom smiled, “Cool!”
Tom pulled down his money box, and started to take out the coins. He wanted there to be £3.99.
He found a 50p, and then a 20p, and 6 5ps, 10 10ps, and a £2 coin. Was that enough? He added up. He stuffed the coins back in. He'd have more tomorrow if he put out the bins. Dad gave him 20p for doing each one. £4.40? Great!
Mum said, “What's up, Tom.”
Tom shrugged, “Homework!”
Mum nodded, “I'm making Ellie's Easter bonnet.”
She showed him her design. A bonnet shape, tied under the chin. She was making a pattern with a saucepan lid and a big plate.
Mum said, “I'll stick on crushed crepe paper flowers on Saturday.”
“Or tissue,” said Tom. “Can I help?”
Mum laughed, “Yes!”
Tom nodded and went back. Maths homework! He'd have finished except Ryan's Mum had gone to the Chippie, and they'd walked back to Ryan's house to eat.
She said one day she'd take them to play Pool in The Swan. Toad sat on his feet.
Tom looked down, so how much did Lucy get?
He wrote 3+19= 23 and then 45-23= 22 Easy! Too easy? Tom scratched his head.
Question 3a, Alice had to walk to school along the road, and it took her 12 minutes, a distance of 60 yards. William had to cycle along the road and it took him 12 minutes, a distance of 96 yards.
Who was faster? Obvious! Easy Squeasy! So Tom wrote the answer: William went faster. Only it took him the same time…? Maths!
Mum called, “Bedtime!”.
“Night Mum,” Tom said, “I’m tired!”
