If the world
were as it was,
filled with towering
unconquered mountains,
its valleys soft with mist
and forests thick
with silent trees.
If its rivers ran clean,
its seas were blue
and its air was pure,
if everything were as it was,
and nobody had yet thought
of timber or jewelry
or bricks and mortar,
or steel and gas or oil and cars,
we wouldn’t need beliefs,
we would already know.
