Some prairie towns are
bulging side-pockets
of development,
clumped as oases inside
cattle country

popping up like
marshmallow shapes,
surrounded by fenced yards
claiming territorial rights.

Samples of Devon and
Beaumont streets
join Devonian Research Centre
and Fas Gas business
in a growing
landscape of enterprise

an asphalt highway
teasing us across the North
Saskatchewan River and beyond.

Thank you, Maisie. Our only daughter lives near Edmonton, Alberta and this poem was based on a trip we took near there about two years ago. I am a little torn between living there or staying here in lovely Nova Scotia, but at our age it would be very hard to leave these familiar sounds and sights. Thankfully, through our writing, we can live anywhere. Cheers, from Richard and Esther.
