When the cities
have all died and the
money has rotted,
when humankind has
either learned or perished,
the trees will come again,
nosing at the underside
of the railway platforms
the pavements and the plazas,
cracking them up and breaking through,
pushing over buildings and toppling
the statues of worthy men,
with their ancient power and infinite patience
they will quietly demolish all we have built,
stretch their great trunks in the sunlight
and spread their green arms over the ruins.
