One day
sometime soon,
the tides will roll in,
just as they always have,
but this time they won't stop.
The seawater
will fill the hotel rooms,
the cars and petrol stations,
flood the mines and the bank vaults,
fill lunch boxes, school satchels
and children's lungs,
and all we have done
will be revealed.
Packets of crisps, bodies, sewage,
furniture, plastic and polystyrene will float
on the oily surface for a while, then sink.
Gradually,
after thousands of years,
the sea will slowly recede,
leaving the land fresh and new,
and those who remain
will come down
from the mountains
to reinvent their world.
