This past Tuesday morning I was passing Saint Batholomew's church on Park Avenue in mid-town New York.
The church attracts a lot of New York's homeless.
When I pass, a homeless man shouts, "Don't give up!" I look up at him and he appears to be looking at me.
I thought to myself, How strange and wonderful of him to offer me hope when he seems to have so little.
It never occurred to me until I was another street away that he was speaking to the other homeless people gathered on the steps. So, on this, my favorite of all American holidays, I offer myself the jackass of the week award and vow that as a so-called writer I will try to pay better attention.
And to all of you out there who may or may not celebrate this holiday I wish you the best of everything and hope you prosper and grow.
I've found out later in life that it's never to late to re-invent yourself and be the someone you always wanted to be.
Have a grand day, no matter what day it is.
