“Gee, Auntie Marge. I really wish I was a beauty queen”, said Marjorie Morrison’s young niece Julia, A.K.A. her sometimes side-kick , Jewel, sighing heavily as they sat on the sofa watching the new Miss U.S.A. on TV being crowned and presented with a large bouquet of flowers, “They look so glamorous and beautiful”.
“Beauty’s only skin deep”, said Marjorie, wisely, “It’s what’s underneath that really counts and, besides, we have a lot more fun using our super-powers and fighting crime don’t we?”.
Just at that moment, however, they saw one of the other beauty contestants, Miss Nebraska rush towards the contestant who was being crowned and grab hold of her crown, tearing it away from her jealously, her face becoming an angry scowl.
“Oh no you don’t!”, she yelled, “That crown should be mine!”.
Then, to the amazement of Marjorie and her niece, they saw the enraged beauty contestant suddenly transform into a hideous, three horned, green skinned monster with one green eye at the centre of its fore-head; a long, forked tongue like a snake and purple, fiery breath and then, bellowing in a deep, echoing and inhuman voice, the monster roared, “I’m the most beautiful here, not you!”.
“Oh my!”, exclaimed Marjorie, changing magically into her bright pink Wonder Witch costume, “It looks like that beauty contest is starting to get rather ugly”.
“But, Auntie Marge, how will we ever get there in time?”, asked Julia, transforming herself into the green, sparkly costume of Jewel with the power of the magical green pendant round her neck.
Wonder Witch drew her golden witch’s wand from the magical, pink utility belt that she always wore.
“Well, remember ‘Alice through The Looking Glass’?”, she replied, pointing her wand towards the TV screen and zapping it with a bright pink bolt of magic electricity, “Perhaps, the same thing might work for us”.
Suddenly; out of the TV came a whirling vortex of pink, scattered with glittering, golden stars that sucked both Wonder Witch and Jewel into it and, before either of them had time to blink, they were both standing on the stage of the Miss U.S.A. beauty pageant.
“Oh, Wonder Witch! Thank goodness you’re here”, said one of the organizers of the pageant, running up to them, “That monster is ruining my contest and it’s taken poor Miss U.S.A. hostage. I don’t know what to do”.
But then the green eyed monster, who was holding a screaming and squirming Miss U.S.A. clamped tightly under its large, muscular right arm, saw Wonder Witch and her side-kick Jewel and let out a long, deep, booming cackle.
“Trying to rain on my parade are you?”, it said, “I’ll show you!”.
And then, out of the single, enormous green eye at the centre of its forehead came a beam of bright green light that, striking Wonder Witch’s pointy pink hat, made it burst into green flames.
“Jeepers-creepers, Wonder Witch”, said Jewel, using her magical pendant of power to surround them in a protective green, bubble like force-field, “That green eyed monster’s looks really can kill. How will we ever save Miss U.S.A. ?”.
But, all of a sudden, they heard the monster wailing sadly and saw it sobbing large, bright green tears.
“Why does everyone hate me?”, it said, “Can’t they see how beautiful I am?”.
Hearing this, Wonder Witch’s eyes lit up as she had a marvellous idea.
Taking off her pointy hat that, though singed by the monsters green fire, still held incredible magical properties, she conjured a large mirror out of it and then, holding it up for the monster to see, she shouted, “Look! You’re not beautiful at all. You’re ugly; an ugly monster of jealousy”.
Snatching hold of the mirror with both its green clawed hands, the creature looked long and hard into it and, as she looked into the glass, it started to crack all over which made the monster roar with sadness.
Then, as if some evil spell had been broken, Wonder Witch and Jewel saw the monster begin to turn back into the beautiful Miss Nebraska.
“What happened?”, asked the beauty contestant, utterly dazed and confused, “I had the most awful nightmare that I was a horrible, big green monster and everyone hated me”.
“It was no dream”, said Jewel, “You really did turn into a monster and terrified everyone”.
But Wonder Witch was more sympathetic to the young woman who was now sobbing ordinary human tears into her hands.
“I don’t think you should be too hard on her, Jewel”, she said, “She’s learned a very important lesson; that those who focus on outer beauty never see the beast inside”.
