Two suns

Thinking of my girls
at this time of year
isn’t easy
but as I sat at my desk
feeling closer to them
than ever before
my heart was filled with love.

There’s no other word for it
love
in such abundance
that I almost forgot myself
who I am
what I am
where I am
and then I remembered
but as confusion rallied
to dampen my thoughts
I looked out of the window
and saw two suns.

Wonderment replaced confusion
as I revelled
in the thought that this was a gift
to me alone.

These were low suns
visible to the eye
and soon I understood
that the second sun
was no more
than refraction’s cloak
stood at the end of a tunnel
a slender cigarette of cloud
but that didn’t matter.

All the colours of the rainbow
danced in the light
on that cloak
just like my daughters
on a bright sunlit morning.
