The Fairy and The Star

The Fairy and the Star were having an argument.
They both wanted to be on top of the Christmas tree, you see.
The fairy said, “I’m a princess. A fairy princess. I should be on top of the tree. I look so beautiful there”.
But the Star said, “Oh no. I should be on top of the tree. I’m the Star after all, the Star of the show and I look so bright and shiny and sparkly”.
All the other Christmas decorations; the baubles and the bells and the silver and golden tinsel thought they were both very silly and they all laughed tinkling laughter like sleigh bells.
And the plastic Snowman said, “Now then, ladies, that’s hardly the Christmas spirit is it?”.
But the Star and the Fairy wouldn’t listen. They argued so much and got so cross that, in the end, they got into a fight.
It was quite a ferocious fight actually, with the Fairy banging the star over the head with her wand and the star pulling at the fairy’s hair and wings.
And they fought so terribly that, in the end, they both collapsed, puffing and panting, tired and worn out.
But, just at that moment, the owner of the decorations; an old woman, looked in the cardboard box where she kept them all and said to herself, “Now which decoration shall I put on top of the tree this year?”.
And, hearing her say this, both the Star and the Fairy shouted, “Me! Me! Pick me!”
But then, when the old woman looked at the star she saw that it was all scratched and dented where the fairy had thumped it with her wand and booted it with her ballet slippers and, when she looked at the fairy, she saw that its wings were all ripped and its dress all torn where the star had poked it with its five sharp golden points.
“Oh dear, oh dear”, said the old woman, “Neither of those ornaments is suitable for going on top of the tree, they’re just too damaged. It looks like I shall have to buy a new decoration for the top of the tree”.
And so, putting on her coat, the old woman went to the shops and bought a new tree top ornament, an Angel.
And all the decorations thought that she looked very beautiful indeed sitting on top of the tree, well all except for the fairy and the star that is, they were very jealous.
“Don’t worry”, chuckled the old woman to them as she got out her sewing box and her box full of little tools for mending things, “I’ll fix you both up as good as new and then, maybe it’ll be one of you next Christmas”.
