It was early the next morning, Jay had taken second guard duty towards first light. He stretched feeling slightly stiff from sitting on the hard ground, thinking to himself that he would be glad of a good night's sleep, in his wrap out of the elements.
Shivering, he hugged himself and made his way over to where Ben and Varden slept. Prodding them, he quietly spoke. “Ben!Varden! Wake up...it's almost light.”
The two sleepers turned to face Jay. “Any sign of that bear?” Ben asked, yawning and stretching, in a bit of a daze, wiping his eyes.
“No...but we need to be away soon,” Jay replied. “It won't be long before the woodsmen start their work in the forest.”
The fire was still burning, as Jay had kept it going. He took some of the food from the night before, warming it up on one of the spears he had made.
“I think you need to tell us about yourself, before we go any further Varden,” said Jay, as he handed the boy a piece of meat.
As they sat and finished the rest of the food, Varden began to explain about the chamber, and how the man whose name was Dawson, had come through a mist, some kind of portal from another world. Then he explained about the man being taken prisoner and how he was locked up in one of the prison caves.
“We have to rescue Dawson,” Varden explained. He told Ben and Jay, that he believed this man was going to be their saviour, the one true master of peace and harmony, who would free the children from the power of Gregor.
Jay was intrigued, being a practising priest. “So where did this Dawson come from?”
“He said he came from a place called Obsidian?” replied Varden.
Ben smiled. “Well...well...well, that's the name of the place those visitors came from along time ago, you remember Jay, when we were at the stones? It sounds intriguing, to be planning to save someone from another world, we really need to help this boy.”
Varden spoke again. “Look if you help me, then I can help you find these people you speak of. I have a friend whom I'm meant to be meeting today, she and her family know most of the people around here, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find them. What were their names again?”
“Their names are Evelyne and Nathen. We don't know if they came down here on their own accord, or whether they were kidnapped. All we do know is, that they left behind all their belongings and were seen leaving with some men.” Replied Ben.
“I can't be seen at the barracks,” said Varden. “If the guards catch me, they'll put me back in the chamber, then I'm done for. But Cinnamon my friend, said she is going to get some strong apple cider, to one of the guards called Will, he's too get the other guards drunk, so that they can get Dawson freed from the cave.”
“But what can we do to help?” asked Ben.
“Well I thought, as you've got horses, you could get Dawson as far away as possible, so we can decide on our next move.” said Varden feeling excited at the plan he had devised.
“Okay,” said Ben, looking at Jay for reassurance. They shook hands, then Varden told them he would ask Cinnamon to make some enquiries around the other families, as to the couples whereabouts, he
felt sure someone would know.
As they put the fire out, the three companions could hear the sound of wood being chopped. “Sounds like work has started already and the sun's not even up yet...not that much sun seems to get through all this fog.
” Coughing, Ben asked, “How do the people cope down here?”
“Oh...we get used to it, the fog also has advantages you know, it's easier to get around without being seen,” said Varden.
“Well my friend...me and Jay are going to call around some of the cabins, see if we can come up with some answers. What will you do for the rest of the day?” Ben enquired.
Varden had no idea how he would pass the time, till he met up with Cinnamon, but as always he knew he must keep himself hidden. “Oh! I'll probably head out across the moor, down to the sea, there are lots of caves to discover, and the fog is thicker on the moors. But I will meet you tonight at this spot, if that's okay with you.”
Ben agreed, but hoped nothing would happen to the boy, he now felt kind of responsible for him, even though they had their own problems, Varden seemed so young to be out here on his own, even with what the boy had told them he'd been through, but there was nothing else they could do till later so they both agreed to meeting Varden later that day.
