MARCH GAMES

The weatherman predicted
freezing rain ahead,
slick roads and chilling temperatures
but when morning came instead
of ice upon the highways
as daylight began to glow,
what I saw through my windowpane
was dancing flakes of snow.
Perhaps it was raindrops that were falling,
raindrops dressed in white fur wraps
with white boots and white mittens
and fluffy white fur caps.
It might have been the predicted rain
like the weatherman had said.
I guess maybe it could have been
but it sure looked like snow instead
of rain that came dancing from the March skies
and landing on the ground,
gathering on the tree branches
and everywhere around.
It wasn’t all that cold out.
It sure didn’t look like rain.
I’m pretty sure it was snowflakes
playing their March games.
They danced around the sky awhile,
then they rested in the trees
to watch the sun come shining through
followed by a spring like breeze.
A few of them grabbed hold the breeze
and like parachutes would float.
Soon, as the day grew warmer,
they took off their fur like coats,
tossed off their mittens
and their boots and hats
and began jumping off the branches
from where in the trees they sat.
They slid down off the icicles
that were clinging to the eaves,
slid and slipped right off the tip of them
just as slick as you please.
The jumped around in puddles.
They slid off the daffodils,
went swimming in the river
and running down the hills.
It seems like they were having fun
playing their games and jumping out of trees
but if they don’t find their coats again,
tonight they will surely freeze.
I can see some tulips smiling
though the weatherman said freezing rain…
But today the sun is shining brightly
while snowflakes play March games.
