Fireflies

I sat in the dark; on that warm summer night…The silver clouds were hiding the moon and the stars making me feel even more lost and alone.
I sat there and listened for that was all I could do, only moving to brush stray insects from my bare legs... And it was then that I saw them, dancing the most beautiful dance I had ever seen.
Fireflies…hundreds of them, bouncing, swirling, leaping, and whirling in the night sky. Bringing me light, hope and happiness.
I felt as light as a feather as I stood up, smiled and started to dance too, I turned round and round, I jumped and I laughed. This felt so right and made me feel so free, as they whizzed around me as I twirled around them, being all too careful not to hurt them.
Then to my amazement as they flew higher and higher they lifted me with them up into the sky and they continued to dance as I continued to turn.
I didn’t need to see the stars anymore, the fireflies had taken their place, making the cloudy night so much more beautiful and bright and I felt almost as if I was one of them as I copied their movement and felt like I could shine.
Then they took me back to the ground and swirled around me again. I sat down and said “Thank you… Thank you so, so very much” then I lay down and fell to sleep in the soft grass, with the image of the dancing fireflies fresh on my mind and we danced on in my dreams as we had most of the night.
