Crow in a Snow Storm

First came the silence. Then waves
of fluttering flakes from ocean’s
surface. And crowding across the land
a flush of white --
wind thrusting at every crevice.
Oblivious to the falling
he preens himself on a branch
protected by an elm--older
than his being.
Older than his flock
yet younger than this ravage
of wind and more --
a superior member and king
of flocks flings full
tumble into the snow
and more.
A silhouette stark against
white – swooping – and diving
surveying his territory. He
thinks he is an eagle.
