Spider,

why do you crouch there
in the sink?
you gave me quite a scare

your squat arachnid form
scurrying out of sight
behind the washing bowl

provoked compassion
made me think
about the value of a soul

remembering the hapless toad
for whom I ran
into the middle of a busy road

it’s just the way I am

so I raised the window
caught you gently
on the bristles of my brush

and set you free, hoping
you’d survive the fall
to set your web upon our bush

And, out of the corner of my eye over breakfast, what should I see but a spider on the other side of the glass, quietly making invisible mends to an invisible net. I couldn't help but think of stall-holders in a busy Indian street, oblivious of time and grateful for what they might get. Why can't I be like that?

I stop to rescue drying worms on paths, too. Although I did eat a few when I was a kid. Never knowingly ate a spider. Collected lots in my hair when I was a milkman though. Cheers Stan.
