Originals and Covers

I'm up and out early these days. A local radio station every morning at 5.15 plays the original of a tune and then a cover version. He then invites listeners to vote for the one they think is best. Yesterday it was "New England" by Billy Bragg. The cover was of course the Kirsty MacColl version. Both good, hard choice. I went for the Billy one in the end. It got me thinking, if you had to choose a cover version of a song that is better than the original, what would it be?

Heres one for you. Your gonna make me lonesome when you go. Dylan with the original. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iJioCcAL4c Then this gem by Madeleine Peyroux http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT9EXNhV-gk Im gonna upset the Dylan fans, but Peyrouxs version is just a beauty!

Bowie's very early song "Letter to Hermione" covered by Bilal & The Robert Glasper Experiment...although anything by Glasper gets my vote at the moment!

Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" covered by Hendrix. Hendrix gets it - sorry Bob, you know that I still love you.

Great choice Kib, that is a brilliant cover by Glasper.

Wow Dylan 0..Others 2.

Oh yes, I hadn't checked your choices Jolono. The maestro trails in the first leg.

Nina Simone and Muse both did totally different cover of Feeling Good - both great and better than the original. And I love The Lemonheads' Mrs Robinson. Maybe better than the original. Certainly faster.
The original: The Letter by the Box Tops http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z8RCfnWPOo I prefer Joe Cocker's version from the live album Mad Dogs and Englishman. One of my favorite albums as a teen. The great Leon Russell on piano. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RnjWLVyMps

Wow Rich. Great choice, I'd forgotten just how great Cocker was!

Seinaid 'Nothing compers 2 you' v's the dwarf version. I like baldies best, being a bald myself of course. I hope that's not being baldist.

Not at all Celts, I hear its very popular with the ladies!

Yes I agree the baldie version is the best in that case.

Don't tell Tony.

Sixpence None The Richer 'There She Goes' over The La's version.

Good call FB!

mr tambourine man by the byrds rather than dylan. william shatner's version? also- cocker doing 'with a little help from my friends' rather than the beatles.mighty quinn - manfred mann rather than dylan. ps. i do actually like dylan.

What is this with Dylan? The well-spring of brilliance and constantly relegated (by me as well) into a runners up slot!

poor bobby - a lot of his stuff is just better by other people. and a lot isnt!

I think thats now about Dylan 0...Others 5. Who'd have thought!

Sinead O'Connor's version of Sacrifice. Much better than the Elton John original.

Hounds of Love by the Futureheads over Kate Bush's version. Mundy and Sharon Shannon instead of Steve Earle - Galway Girl. Poor Bob!

For me it's Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter.
Tim Hardin's Reason To Believe by (dare I say it) Rod Stewart. I love old Tim - but he couldn't sing for toffee.
Be Good Tanyas "For the Turnstiles" rather than Neil Young's. A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow.

new cavalcaderl I like too, sorry! Dylan Blowing in the wind' also The Long and Winding Road. Definitely Mr Tambourine Man by Byrds. The Scaffold I think A Day Without Love Bobby Vee was it There You Go Baby Here Am I. Many more now you have got me going. Bits and Pieces Dave Clarke Five. The Supremes Baby Love. I have Joe Cocker LP 2nd hand one. julie
There you go, Julie relegates Dylan as well. Good choices too Julie.

I used to prefer the Johnny Cash version of Hurt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go to the original Nine Inch Nails http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjwgYvzQWS4 but the anguish is heart stopping in both, expressing age and experience of the singer.

Fine choices lenchenelf.

Wow, you're on a roll now Julie. Great choices.

That is a great choice lenchenelf. Just remembered how good the Cash version is!

That reminds me - Johnny Cash's version of the Beatles song 'In My Life' is stupendous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlhcyWLORes Far better than the Beatles. Now who's deriding icons?
He sings that song with such conviction that you believe every word.

brian ferry doin hard rain's gonna fall! ok i'm just looking to go dylan bashing now - but the ferry version is better (to my ear).

I completely agree with that. Ferry at his best.
