Oscar Wilde once defined morality as “the attitude we adopt towards those whom we personally dislike.” And it would seem that disdain disguised as moral outrage rears its head all too often when it comes to porn stars. We hear of many horror stories..drug overdoses, murders, alcoholism, car crashes, suicides, death by AIDS…as if these afflictions are cautionary tales, the devil claiming a debt. Others, such as Seka, Heather Hunter and Traci Lords, started out in porn and went from strength to strength in business and entertainment.
Standing between the two extremes is my special friend Angel Kelly.
Angel Kelly XXX Adult Video Film Star 1986-1991: Featured on over two hundred videos. She was the first successful black female star. She starred and featured with such legends as John Leslie, Paul Thomas, Tom Byron, Nina Hartley, Ginger Lynn, Jeannie Pepper and John Holmes. She honed her skills as an Actress, a Producer, a Director, and Screen Writer. Angel Kelly co-founded “The Pink Ladies Social Club” with Nina Hartley, Porsche Lynn and Jeanna Fine, a support group for the women in the industry.
At the request of the man himself, Angel appeared in the Tupac Shakur video “How Do You Want It?” , Tupac’s double A-Side to the Number One Billboard hit “California Love.”
Like Tupac, I was fortunate to meet Angel through the music industry and have been blessed with her friendship, to know her as Pamela Moore.
Angel Kelly is a globally-renowned brand that Pamela Moore worked hard to create, to build up. Pamela has big plans for Angel Kelly: AK Enterprise as a promoter of models, talent and musicians; two books; a restaurant in Memphis, lines of merchandise; inspirational films.
This time around, the Angel Kelly brand will be about Memphis. It will be about the support of family and friends who love Angel Kelly and believe in her. The Angel Kelly story will be a tale of two cities - LA and Memphis. The LA story of the adult film superstar who, within four years of arriving in Tinseltown with two suitcases, became a global icon. So much so that even today, there are nearly one hundred women in the world - (known of )- that claim to be her. The Memphis story of the Everywoman, the Single Mother, who wants to rebuild an entertainment powerhouse in the cradle of American Music…..
I have two books in development. My first book is “The Sins of Angel Kelly”, which is the beginning about my life. Growing up, how I got into the adult movie business. My experience in the adult industry. Rising up to stardom.
The second is “The M-Town Story”: Leaving the business. Arriving in Memphis. Starting from the bottom. Hustling in the streets of Memphis. Having a career in the restaurant/hospitality business. Stepping into the music industry, locally in the Memphis area. Never ever being able to walk away from being recognized and also known as Angel Kelly.
When I look at how my finances turned out, compared with other white actors, I wondered “is the adult industry racist?” During the time that I became a star, I felt the industry could be considered at times ” racist” by the choices they made. How did that affect me? For me the opportunities I had to start my career were because of who I knew.
The movie “Boogie Nights” showed the mainstream movie audience what our lives were like back then. The first time I saw this movie , my mouth fell wide open. Every character in the movie, was someone I really knew in the the business. I saw myself in one of the characters….
I formed The Durty Souf Tour in 2006 working as a promoter in Memphis, when I met so many different independent artists trying to be heard. Looking for an opportunity and a platform. So I created the tour.
I would target college towns, giving local artists in that town a chance to get on stage. Offering them the chance to sell or give CD’S, T-shirts or pictures to the public. These were good shows, good parties, good opportunities. I would have a celebrity artist make appearances.
A.K.Enterprises has had a particular interest in the promotion and management of independent Hip Hop artists. My company is based out of Memphis Tennessee. Why? because after meeting Tupac, I found that Memphis is the best kept secret of the Hip Hop world. Some talent have left Memphis to make it big…
But I want to see Memphis be recognized…Memphis is full of talent, waiting for a chance. A.K. Enterprise supports independent artist, and wants to give serious artists that opportunity to be heard. Some of the local artists I’ve worked with are Mac E, Misc. The Dolla Boi$, Da Volunteers,Freestyle,K.I.G.Fam, Pistol Pete, Hostlye, Yo Gotti, Yung Kee…..
Ain’t nothin like “Gangsta Rap”…Only a true gangsta can spit out lyrics to be recognized as gansta rap. There is also a Hip Hop sound. To me best describes the artist “Soulja Boy” from Batesville Mississippi…He had the Number 1 song in the world, called”Crank That Soulja Boy”… So what I’m saying is honestly who is to say that hip hop/rap music promotes violence? Here in America, the evening news promotes violence…..I met Tupac after moving back to Memphis in 1991. In 1996 I Went on a vacation/business trip back to California. I was interested in what offers I had to return to the business. Of the offers were ” we’ll give you a little, and we’ll make a lot…Long story short, I was fortunate enough to meet Tupac. I was a really big fan. I Came to find out, he was a big fan of mine…
It was at the Soul Train Awards in March 1996, when I met Tupac. His CD “All Eyez On Me” had just hit the streets. Number 1 in the country, I was a very big fan. A mutual friend introduced us that night. He hosted an after party in Santa Monica. When my friend introduced us, I was in AWE…I couldn’t believe I met Tupac, and he knew who Angel Kelly was.
We met up later at my friend’s house. No people ,no entourage, no security….Just me and him and a bottle of Hennessey.
We talked about everything under the sun. We had alot of things in common. One was a love for Hip Hop music….He told me a lot about himself. And he was very curious about the business. When I told him about why I was in L.A., the best advice he could give me was, ” if you’re not satisfied with the money they are offering, DONT GO BACK! F**K EM!”
As regards my own interest and my taste in music, I was born in the 60’s. And I grew up in the Midwest, in a small town where there were very few black people living. So 60’s & 70’s rock-n-roll was it! Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Janis Joplin, I loved all of it! As a young child in the South, I grew up with the Motown sound. Always familiar with the latest R&B hits.
My parents made sure that I went to a good school where I was blessed to play the violin for five years. I love classical music. I love that I can read music.
I live in Memphis because I was born in Memphis. But I grew up in the mid-west (Michigan). While I was in the business I lived in California. When I left the business, I moved to Memphis because that is where all my family lived. (Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc) I was about to have my first child. And I wanted to be close to family.
My life after retiring from the business has been like this: As Angel Kelly when I left the business, I felt like I could do anything. Even though I was a single mom, I had no fear. Little did I know the incredible adjustment I would have to make.
When I was in the business, I was very proud of who I was and the business I was in. When I left the business and moved to Memphis, it was a rude awakening. The reality is that people in the South were two-faced. They enjoyed watching porn behind closed doors. But when the doors were open…people would testify that they would never do such a thing!
Starting all over again, dealing with society, was difficult. I was always accepted by people UNTIL they found out who I was. It didnt matter that I was a smart, single mom, with a strong faith…I got paid to have sex on camera for the world to see….and that was disgraceful…but when those doors are closed…aaahh!
I want to run my own business, my own successful ventures.
Pamela Louise aka Angel Kelly has twenty years of experience in the restaurant/country clubbing field.I am definitely interested in my own supper club restaurant here in the Memphis area. A place for dinner, drinks and occasional live entertainment. But before that happens, I would really like AK Enterprise -( my promotional/management agency) to get established.
Fortunately, I have a colleague who is helping me locate the talent here in Memphis, and the management back-up and support in both New York and LA. I am trying to secure some television appearances, while talking to publishers and agents about the books. It will be a totally new, refreshing approach to literature on the adult movie business, together with the music and entertainment industry, from the viewpoint of a single mother working her way back up.
Along the way have been some challenges. Very late in my adult life, I was diagnosed with Asthma, then ten years after that, Diabetes. They were both very rude experiences to go through. They are both hereditary. I just want to be able to share with others what I went through. And become part of a support group for others. As well as getting to know others who understand the trials that I go through.
For the last seven years I have been involved with St Jude Children’s Hospital, by participating in the Fed Ex St Jude Classic Golf Tournament each year. My future plans are to become a volunteer for the hospital, to help the children.
When, like a lot of people, I try to think of what sort of America or world do I want for me and my family? But this really isnt a logical question for me.
I believe that America and the world are in the final days. Of course I want the best for everyone…but my faith tells me that isn’t to be. I have to take each day, one day at a time. Keep my faith and share GOD’S WORD with my children….with that I know we’ll be covered by the Blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
