WAITING FOR THE RAIN (IP)

In this quiet city street at night
I sit by the side of the road
With you stretched across my lap;
Stroking your shiny, black hair -
So thick, now tinged with grey and white.
I try to pretend you are taking a nap,
Half hoping for help to arrive -
But too late now, I fear, for that.
I know that I will never hear
Your sweet and gentle voice again.
My life’s companion lies here, dead.
This morning, just like every day
You were so joyful, and alive.
I raise my hand to wipe my face;
And streak my cheek with red.
Now I sit here, waiting for the rain
To wash my silent tears away
As I mourn you, my beloved cat.

So , so sad, Linda, and
So , so sad, Linda, and beautifully and lovingly expressed. I recently lost both my dear old cats within a month of each other and miss them so much. This poem has me in tears as I write.

So very sad, Linda...reminds
So very sad, Linda...reminds me of when I lost my cat, Chessie. I too needed my box of tissues.

I believed it too! Last
I believed it too! Last November my younger daughter bought me Sage and Saffron as a surprise birthday pressie.(Some ad in the paper or online, a woman whose cat had 4 pretty moggies and she still needed to find a home for the two 'girls') The week after they got spayed Sage got hit by a motor first thing in the morning. I buried her in the raised bed in my little back yard. Saffie dug her up a couple of times, then stopped. 'You were so joyful and alive' stands out for me. Elsie

Hi Linda, you put into words
Hi Linda, you put into words the sorrow of loosing a feline friend so well. Having lost many cats to death throughout my life, I too could identify with this poem. I also think you captured the feelings in the title of the poem, which was very moving. Well done on this IP. Jenny.
