A Deeper Understanding

In a greatly brave display of their prowess
they chased down a defenseless whale
As the harpooner complained, cursing the rain
he steadied his aim, waiting for her to broach
instinctively he counted, knowing that her need for breath
would ultimately be, the very reason for her death
And he fired, his explosive dart uncoiling from the bow
fumbling to reload in total disbelief, he pondered as to how
she had feigned her rise, as if knowing she could win
by way of more breath, perhaps a second wind within
or merely a greater will and determination, to live her way
not to become an easy victim on yet another, easy killing day…

Hi Rob, a poingnant poem
Hi Rob, a poingnant poem with thankfully a happy ending. Such a sad picture that is all too familiar for this majestic creature the whale. You managed to tell your story so poetically as always. Jenny.
