Toward a Critique of American Capitalism 2

It would be ideal to have a diverse, uniquely differentiated freemarket economy. It looks like America is headed toward that goal. I, as an Asian American, cannot find pants that are my size often. I used to joke that I would have to go to the kid's section to get my pants. If I do buy pants, I have to have them shortened. Asian businesses in ethnic business sections of New York have clothes that fit me nicely, but the clothes look too Korean. Clothes have to be translated culturally too and they are not. In the future, I do think they will be translated culturally and perhaps these clothing stores will move into shopping malls. But as of right now, I have to buy my clothes at the GAP or Marshalls. Talking about clothes, Abercrombie & Fitch settled a discrmination lawsuit concerning its lack of diversity in 2004. It seems to me a little unfair just to target Abercrombie & Fitch for this. Vogue magazine features no black models although the Italian Vogue features only black models. I really do not see much diversity in culture. Most of the stores that I see in the Mall have extremely thin white models. Of course, most of the people in the mall are white. So, in one sense, the demographic in the Mall matches the advertising. Most of the corporations in the Mall are corporation owned or controlled by mainly white people. I don't really have a problem with this either, but I wonder... is this what is meant by American diversity? That white people own and control the majority of the corporations while ethnic people become the majority in terms of population by 2042? Now, I am not one of those people who believe that majority should rule. After all, the majority can be a tyrannous political force. Nor am I uncomfortable with the idea of a minority of whites ruling a country if they can present the right case and argue it forcefully and gracefully. What I am uncomfortable with is the idea of whites determining the identity of ethnic minorities like me by assuming that I want to dress like whites, eat like whites, etc. Also, with shopping mall, it is almost entirely the middle or upperclass that is courted. In other words, as of right now, we are not anywhere near a diverse, uniquely differentiated Shopping Mall. Such Malls would have specialty clothing stores for Asians, would incorporate discount stores for the poor, etc. Even with Shopping Mall demographics, many shopping malls in ethnic neighbors are closing or doing horribly or are doing sharp sales in order to make ends meet. This assumptions that ethnic minorities want what whites want is terribly wrong. Secondly, most ethnic minorities who live with whites have a "rude awakening" when they realize that they are not white and actually colored, including Asians who often like to think they are "white." Now, there are some ethnic minorities who are "white" in a sense and that is their choice. What does "white" mean anyway? Does it mean a house, two cars, 2 or 3 kids, etc.? No longer. Does white mean "universal"? No longer. I have no idea what white means anymore.

What does white mean? In my
What does white mean? In my own family circle. It can mean people losing and finding one another together through Facebook. It can mean family reaching for the nearest generalisation about our relatives because we fear to extend our emotional range to cover the possibility of confusion complexity or change. It can mean warmth or the opposite, it can mean community or narrow competitiveness.
It also means, for me, hating shopping unless it is for limited budget items or in a charity shop Elsie
