another imaginative background to the 1920s IP photograph

Mums and Dads and sisters, brothers,
neighbours, grandfathers, grandmothers
joined a club, and Mrs Billings
collected all their weekly shillings.

Hire a coach from Jakes and Co.
Have a conflab where to go –
Brighton, Barry, Borth, Boulogne –
can they get to somewhere foreign?!

Too far for Brummies in one day
[as yet no M1 motorway!]
but park, and sleep in seats, make do
close to a Chippie and a loo.

Yes, it is within their means,
this ferry day-trip, Bob explains.
They’d hear the lingo, time on sand,
francs for gifts and lunches planned.

They went, and took a photograph
to long remember with a laugh
their epic enterprise excursion,
the fun, exhaustion, satisfaction.

A great response to the IP, Rhiannon. Love these details: 'park, and sleep in seats, make do /close to a Chippie and a loo.' It all fits so well.

Yes, Rhiannon this is the most likely scenario. They paid for it through the Club, they went, they had a fun day of 'exhaustion, satisfaction' they keep the shared memories alive in the photo. Very real. Well done          Elsie

What a jolly picture this poem paints Rhiannon!  It kind of rolls along like the old coach or the ferry.  Really caught the mood.
