Reasons to be Cheerful on 'Blue Monday'

Being able to jump out of bed at will...
unlike my dear husband with Parkinson’s:
the sumptuousness of fresh-laundered towels
the comforting hum from upstairs – the slow thrum
of Classic FM; knowing he’s up and OK, and in the shower
the effervescence of giggles of next door’s kids – escaped
to the backyard, milking each second of freedom
before school
finding my dad’s old, brown leather gloves
in the back of a drawer; each crease, each fold, each
spot of oil – a story untold
yolks that don’t break when I make poached eggs
waves that do, when I’m on the sea-shore
the ridge of trees across the valley I look out upon –
billows like a glorious, green shawl
to be able to say I saw Halley’s Comet – gaze
at the photo he took – hanging on our wall
remembering days like these – being grateful
for them all.
In times when nothing stood, but worsened, or grew strange,
there was one common good (s)he did not change. Philip Larkin

What a lovely mix of cheering
What a lovely mix of cheering feeling, sights, sounds, thoughts, memories! – as you say, to think of when other things are tough.

Well done Tina! Both for the
Well done Tina! Both for the quality of your poem and for the reality that you do it! Being cheerful can be harder work than being miserable. It is well worth it, when it is an achievable goal, fruitful both for self and others and I particularly like 'the effervescence of giggles' from next door. I am sure you are a lovely neighbour as well as being a consistently very good poet Elsie

A breath of fresh air indeed.
A breath of fresh air indeed. And it's things like being able to say 'Yes I saw Halley's Comet' that then makes you think of all the other things we have been blessed with seeing and doing throughout the years. Beautifully written. And yet more Cherries. Roy
