Lilies for Lily

Her twentieth birthday today...
I take her out to lunch.  She
loves to lunch – Panini, and
a mocha – soya milk, naturally;
the havoc cows’ milk wreaks
on her skin, leaves her no choice.
 
Afterwards, we walk along the street;
make a b-line for the flower market.
Her penchant for flowers – something 
I like to think she inherited from me.
 
Whilst browsing amongst Agapanthus, 
and Kangaroo Paws – the colour of the sun
as it rusts in the watercolour wash of a Turner 
we are reminded of her; 
 
not just because we often came here, 
the three of us, and not just because she, too, 
shared that same love of nature, but because 
of the smell; the scent of all things living – 
breathing, lingered in the air that day.
Lilies for our lily, who went 
and went away.

Dear Tina, 

I feel for you... this is so eloquently expressed without falling into cliche or sentimentality but a peek into your world together, your shared beings.  Utterly lovely and so sad, at the same time.  

There is a definite difference between the structure of the first two stanzas and the last two... but knowing you, it's deliberate to show your unstructured response to remembering the smells.

Makes me want to send lots of virtual hugs as well as my gift today.

It must be good to be able to share with your granddaughter like this, the outing and the sharing of the memories, sharing with understanding across the generations not so common. Rhiannon

It certainly is, Rhiannon.  I am going to miss her when she starts at uni in September, but these past months have been something special, and as you say, all too rare these days.
