Call Of The River

In Loving Childhood memories
of Tales of the River Bank.
Beyond the bustling crowded streets
where childhood memories are fulfilled,
from gathering bluebells in the wood
to squishy – squelchy muddy wellies,
there's a place brimming with spirit,
where tittle – tattle chatter snakes
its way down river...no tumbledown
ramshackle here...just a peaceful life.
Hush! Listen...pay attention,
resonance reverberating all around,
wherever you go and care to view;
signs leave a trail of clues for you,
habitation...a fiesta of evidence,
a joyous problem to be solved;
existence embodies the essence
of every tree – flower and creature.
Across river deep and wide,
weary – hackneyed beaver
swiftly pursues a tasty morsel,
when a skirmish conflict he engaged,
a riotous – caterwauling of unruly – downy ducks
scramble the embankment, jostling their kin,
making such a din...unaware of hidden dangers,
no fear do they have just adventure on their minds,
Mother's little darlings do not
see water flies skim and glide,
as tree lines hang their branches
low, suspended as they sway,
or the Wherryman drifting
across twinkling ripples,
the sun sinking low; robed
beneath a shelter of leaves.
From wrinkled bark in crevices deep
a mischievous creature there would peep,
a twitchy nose – two button eyes appear,
checking around to see if all was clear,
just a twinkle in his mother's eye,
fox cub now hungry wonders why;
he feels the lick of a gentle breeze
pass across his coat with ease.
Deep beneath the forest ground,
heartbeat of the earth is found...
and all the roosting birds take flight,
before they say their last goodnight.

'from gathering bluebells in
'from gathering bluebells in the wood'
to squishy – squelchy muddy wellies'
– Enjoyed that! You have an eye for bringing in some lovely detail.
Is it Johnny Morris' Tales of the Riverbank your remembering? We enjoyed them so much with our younger children! Rhiannon

good to have a reader
Glad to read your story I like the characters and care about them, any good writer should be able to make the reader do that and you have.
Nature is magical and never fails to inspire. I grew up on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, surrounded by woods, fields and long dirt roads so nature was kind of my childhood playmate, I even wrote a poem about it some years ago, think I'll post it. You might like it and I'll keep reading Dwellers too, good writing Ray
