A watercolour – signed, just,
Jade – his portrait, as a young man
on an easel in Granddad’s attic, by the window. 
After all these years, find it here, still.
 
As a kid I’d brave the cobwebs –
climb the stairs, each visit;
perhaps, she’d be there, this time,
but she never was. 
 
Who’s Jade? I asked him one day, 
but he didn’t reply... only looked at me 
in a strange kind of way. Shame,
that now I’ll never know.
 
The paint in the pallet, cracked –
sun-dried; an orange beret, 
faded with age, and a parasol
with a tortoiseshell shaft, hangs
on a hook behind the door
like a question mark.
 
Clouds across the sun... shadows 
come and go...fret the canvas;
transient as lines on her brow, 
as I envisage it now; 
 
ash-blonde hair – maybe flirting
with a cheek; her tongue feathering
her lip, deep in concentration...
the swish of sable...
 
and those green eyes – they must
have been green, it would have
suited her so...saying, 
Would I, perchance,
care to pose?

Good morning Tina,

just had to read this poem aloud,  it oozes beauty.  As someone who enjoys painting,  it was right up my street.

A colourful painting by the way...put a smile on my face,  as did your poem.  smiley

I adored this verse - especially 'her tongue feathering her lip...' But the whole thing is painted with colour and possibilities, and a sense of nostalgic longing to know something you can never catch hold of. I think the picture you used is gorgeous - is it done with felts?

Dead chuffed you enjoyed this one so much.  I loved writing, incidentally, my imagination running riot...and speaking of which that riot of colour as I like to think to think of it, done with water based oils which I love to work in. As you are probably aware, the only downside is that the paint takes about two weeks to dry which can be a problem sometimes, and yet on other occasions an advantage.

And speaking of painting, as I am writing this, I have the painters and decorators in redoing my bathroom, and at present there is an awful sound of hammering as they are taking out my old shower ready to install a new one, and I am certainly not looking forward to the next day or so.  But, hopefully, it will be worth it in the end, or so I try to tell myselfsmiley

I'm sure it will be worth it, but I feel for you - I hate all the noise and disruption. Go and sit in your garden with a cup of herbal tea and breathe.

Good idea, Bee, especially as the sawing and drilling has just begun.  Thank goodness it's fine outside today.  Now I'm off to make a cup of that camomile teasmiley
