Just Another Memory

I shuttle along the road of
life, a little slower in the leg-stretching
thinking on busy times
when a bicycle was king of the road,
tires scraping a dusty collection
of loose stone
looking out for a moose
crossing in front of us --
quite normal for such a scene
back in our boyhood days of 1952
mom always wondering when
we’d be back for supper –
Lee, our leader, in front as usual
Harvey panting at the pace
and me desperate to catch up
food just a few miles away
in northern Quebec, city Rouyn by name.
Past scenes are memories today
a pause in time;
I remember shouts and sweat then
racing to some deadline --
my folks long gone and I’m sure
they made it all the way to a better place;
this journey of my own
not quite complete.
