Like tumbling angels from the sky

They fell amongst the sunflowers

And the flames

How should we mark the place they fell

After the sound

Of the fury

And the fire

Have faded into memory?

White rags flutter

In the soft breezes of a blue day

Tattered ribbons

To remind us where they lay

How should we mark the place they fell

When time has covered the black indignity

Of their slaughter

With a fresh blanket of green?

Should we mark the place

With the muddied footprints

Of those whose hands are stained forever

Oh forever!

With their blood?

Or with the foul words and cruel lies

Of the men who fed the flames

Burning in the minds of those

Who pressed the button?

How should we mark the place they fell?

Grow a rose where each one lay

A rose as red as the blood they shed

For those who loved

And lost them
