I was standing in the kitchen
washing the day go by
all the dishes were in the sink,
admist bright sunshine.
.
When all at once a flock
of four chaffinches flew down,
and perched upon the tv aeriels,
and jumped up and down.
.
"Hello!" one called, "How are you?
another, "We came because we're back!
We went to a place of sunshine -
with food upon the ground."
.
I waved to them; the merry birds;
as they rose up, a feathery float.
Once sure in their airy home -
they flew to the ancient tree line.
.
Chaffinches are a lovily bird,
so pretty to see - with bright yellow
waistcoats who sing so sweetly.
.
For they are the merriest of all
the garden birds, the clever little fellows.

I love the line, 'washing the day...' That wonderful feeling in the mundanity of things to be lifted by the miracle of migrating birds.

P.S. If I may point out a minor typo, on the seventh line of the second stanza it should be tv aerials.
