I saw a faceless man
Whose features had been wiped away
By some calamity.
A blank expanse of scar and grafted skin . . .
An orifice from which he still could speak . . .
And though my eyes would not confront
This devastated face,
I heard the man speak simple words of warmth
To put me more at ease.
Then I knew that he was there . . .
Whole . . .
Like you . . .
Like me . . .

The words 'simple words of warmth' are so comforting. I really liked this a lot.

How good that he was able to
How good that he was able to put at ease those who wanted to approach and know him. As Catherine says, those 'words of warmth' show so much of his character that has overcome some of his devastation and can help him through to more of renewed companionship. And as you say, have the emotion to show he is there and welcoming contact, though unable to show the facial body language welcome on which we rely. Very moving and so concise. Rhiannon
