In the Early Morning Rain...

Deposited you at the station;
it had been tipping it down, only now
a peach of a clear, blue sky.
 
On the platform your scarf waving goodbye; 
kidded myself the wind played no part
in its action.
 
I fussed over your jacket, said 
it needed ironing...I’d do it, next time
your were home, and then there was the dress
requiring a button sewing on, on the sleeve. 
 
Reached to hug you as you strained to hear
the imminent arrival of the train, but
you brushed me aside...
 
text-book goodbyes – not for you. You
and backpack safely aboard – only then
could you look me straight in the eyes,
 
even so, it was more than obvious to me
you were already gone from this stopping train
to Kings Cross – St. Pancras – at least, halfway
round the world, when it pulled away.
 
It would be nice, having the kitchen
back to myself, although I’d miss like crazy
your concoctions, and tasting the passion
in all your zany dishes.
 
The carriage – empty bar you, so nothing
to distract me, except the track – glinting
as you shook down your hair, blew a kiss
in a bubble at the pane – window,
fringed, still...in early morning
rain.

 Mustn't show emotion at that age. This reminded me of a scene I watched while waiting a train arrival recently. A grandmother seeing her grandchildren off, and asking the ticket collector was'nt the lift working yet for getting to the next platform, and he said, 'No', they were waiting for trade inspection, but that he could escort over the line where the boards were. 'No, I'll be fine says teenager'.  (her case on casters looked extremely heavy) After Gran had gone, she suddenly asked him about that again, and confessed it might be nice as her case was ultra heavy. I did feel sorry for Gran having to let it go and not fuss, and not know what would happen!  Rhiannon
